First I would recommend getting rid of all viruses, spyware, and malware that may be present on your machine. Below you will find a list of freeware apps that will assist in protecting, maintaining, and cleaning a windows based system.
People like to use different things so I have tried to include quite a few choices for each application type.

after you download those scan your entire hardrive(may take a little while but let it scan, its worth it)
Now after you get that crap off it should be running faster. follow these next steps to make it even faster. NOTE: you must be the system admin to do most of these.
System Tools
================
1) go to run > msconfig and set it so that only programs you need will boot at startup.
2)disk cleanup , go to start and look for system tools and click disk cleanup. remove all temporary internet files, cookies, and all that crap.
3) Run disk derfrag. This can be found in the system tools folder aswell.
4) while not needed it is usefull to clear useless things out of the registry. If you do not know how to do this properly then do not attempt it because a mistake may damage your computer.
go to start > run > type in regedit.
Internet browser’s and Internet security

A registry cleaner is useful if you are looking to clear up some useless paths or empty/unused directories. Which, in the end, will help speed up your system.
